In UP, consumers who have installed smart prepaid meters may get more than 2% relief in electricity rates. UP Power Corporation has sought a reply from the power companies on the suggestion submitted on the basis of the Central Government’s proposal during the hearing on electricity rates. The Central Government has suggested all power companies to consider giving up to 5% relief to consumers who have installed smart prepaid meters. UP Power Corporation has proposed to give relief to consumers who have installed prepaid meters.
During the hearing held for deciding the new rates of electricity, there has been a demand for giving more relief to the consumers who have installed prepaid meters. During the hearing in all the electricity companies, the State Electricity Consumer Council had demanded that the proposal of two percent be increased to five percent on the basis of the suggestion of the Central Government. Now that the hearing process has been completed and the Regulatory Commission is moving ahead towards deciding the new rates, it has sought a reply from all the electricity companies on this.
Sources say that the commission intends to increase this relief based on the suggestion of the central government. However, the final decision will be taken only after receiving the response from the power companies and power corporations. The central government has suggested relief to encourage prepaid meters. The central government believes that after the installation of prepaid meters, the hassle of bill collection will end and revenue efficiency will increase, so its benefits should be shared with the consumers.
More than 33 lakh prepaid meters have been installed
Under the Revamp Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), smart prepaid meters have been installed in place of postpaid meters for more than 33 lakh consumers in the state. By the time new electricity rates are expected to be decided within the next two months, this figure may cross 60 lakh. Last year in November, when the electricity companies had submitted the annual revenue requirement proposal to the Regulatory Commission, the number of prepaid meters under this scheme was not even close to 10 lakh. Apart from this, the number of consumers living in multi-storey buildings already have prepaid meters installed is not included in this 33 lakh.
On this basis, a proposal has been made to increase the discount
– Prepaid consumers pay the bill amount in advance, hence electricity companies will get interest on it
– The hassle of bill collection will end, hence the need for meter readers will decrease
– There will be a reduction in the manpower of the people who prepare the bills, hence the expenses of the electricity companies will be reduced
– Revenue efficiency of power companies will increase
