In a major digital initiative to make Aadhaar-related services easier, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is rolling out a new mobile application. Named ‘e-Aadhaar’, the app will allow citizens to update important personal information like name, address, date of birth and mobile number directly from their smartphones. The app is being designed as an all-in-one platform to simplify the often cumbersome process of Aadhaar update.
Many changes in Aadhaar can be made through the app
According to UIDAI sources, this new app will greatly reduce the need to visit Aadhaar centres for regular updates. Users will be able to make most changes remotely through a user-friendly interface, without long queues and paperwork. Only biometric updates, such as fingerprint and iris authentication, will require visiting Aadhaar centres for verification.
Verification will be done through AI and government databases.
A major feature of this new app will be that it will integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Face ID technology to provide secure, remote access to Aadhaar services. This method of digital identification is expected to provide convenience as well as strong security against identity fraud.
The app will be able to automatically fetch supporting documents from government-verified databases. This means that the details submitted by the user can be verified using data from sources like PAN database, passport office, driving license registry, PDS ration card system and MNREGA records. Utility bills like electricity bills can also be accepted for verification of residential address.
Why is this app important?
This initiative is part of a broader effort by UIDAI and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) to make Aadhaar-related services streamlined and more accessible. Recently, the government also launched the ‘Aadhaar Good Governance Portal’, which aims to expedite Aadhaar verification requests. For over 130 crore Aadhaar holders in India, this new mobile application could prove to be a game changer, especially for those who live in remote areas or who do not have an Aadhaar centre nearby.
