A Permanent Account Number (PAN), or PAN card, is a mandatory document for anyone earning income or conducting financial transactions in India. It’s also required to open a bank account, file income tax returns, or purchase property.
But many people don’t know that if their PAN card isn’t linked to Aadhaar, or if the information provided in the two doesn’t match, the PAN can become inactive. It’s essential to have an active PAN when filing your Income Tax Return (ITR), otherwise you could face significant fines and trouble. Therefore, it’s important to check whether your PAN card is active in a timely manner.
To check PAN status online, you need to have two things:
Valid PAN number
Registered mobile number linked to that PAN (for OTP verification)
Easy Steps to Check PAN Card Online
Step 1: Visit the Income Tax Department’s official e-filing website,
Step 2: Click on the “Verify PAN Status” option in the “Quick Links” section on the home page.
Step 3: A new page will open, where you will be asked to enter your PAN number, name, date of birth, and mobile number. Make sure to enter the same mobile number you entered when you first applied for your PAN card.
Step 4: After entering all the information, click the “Continue” button. An OTP will then be sent to your mobile number.
Step 5: Enter the OTP received on your mobile number and press the “Validate” button.
Then, your PAN card status, validity, and jurisdiction (the office it is associated with) will be displayed on the screen.
