Microsoft employees will now have to come to the office 3 days a week. The company is going to implement this requirement for most of its employees. This hybrid work model is expected to be announced in September.

At the same time, it can be implemented by the end of January 2026. This new model of Microsoft will be applicable to employees living within a radius of 50 miles of the Redmond, Washington headquarters.

It is being said that for the employees of some teams, it may be made mandatory to come to the office 4 or 5 days a week. The Executive Vice President of the company will take these decisions. However, there will be limited exceptions for certain circumstances.

Why this change in the work model?

Microsoft officials attribute this change to some data. The data suggests that employees who spend 3 to 4 days in the office have higher Thrive scores. This score is a measure of satisfaction and well-being in the workplace. These insights come from the Thrive global tool, now in Microsoft Teams. It collects sentiment data through employee surveys on a regular basis.

It is also worth noting that Microsoft’s Redmond campus is undergoing a major transformation. There are plans to build 17 new buildings in place of 12 old buildings, which will create space for about 8,000 more employees. 7 buildings have already opened. Microsoft says that employees who will return to work from the office 3 days a week will have separate desks.

15000 jobs have been cut

In July this year, news came that another round of layoffs has started in Microsoft. This time 9000 people may lose their jobs. This will affect about 4 percent of Microsoft’s total workforce. Microsoft had earlier laid off about 6000 employees in May 2025. In early June, news came that the company laid off more than 300 employees.
