Lots of taxpayers are asking the same thing: Where is my ITR refund? The money is taking way longer than usual this year. It creates confusion. The thing is, you can check the status quickly. You avoid all that stressful back-and-forth.

ITR Refund Stuck? How to Check Status Using PAN Card

An income tax refund happens when you pay too much tax. This usually means your Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) or advance payments exceeded your final tax bill. The Income Tax Department returns this extra amount to your bank.

The refund process starts only after your ITR is successfully e-verified. It typically takes about four to five weeks after you file.

Why Your Refund Is Delayed

If the money hasn’t shown up, simple errors are the most common reason. Here’s the kicker: the Department is also doing much stricter verification this year, especially for high-value claims or complex returns. That causes delays.

Common mistakes that stop your refund:

  • Bank details are wrong. Your bank account is not pre-validated.

  • The names do not match. The bank account name and your PAN name must be identical.

  • Old bank details. You used an incorrect IFSC code or an account that is now inactive or closed.

  • Aadhaar link is missing. Your PAN is not linked with your Aadhaar card.

  • Mismatched Data. The tax figures in your ITR do not match what the department has on record (like Form 26AS or the Annual Information Statement). This triggers a manual review.

  • You forgot to verify. Your ITR was filed but not e-verified within 30 days. The return becomes invalid until you verify it.

How to Track Your Refund

You can check the status in just a few clicks. Use your PAN number for both methods.

Option 1: The E-Filing Portal

  1. Go to the official e-filing site:

  2. Log in using your PAN and password.

  3. On the home page, go to e-File → Income Tax Returns → View Filed Returns.

  4. You will see a list of your filed returns. Check the status next to the relevant Assessment Year.

Option 2: The TIN-NSDL Portal

  1. Go to the direct tracking page:

  2. Enter your PAN and the Assessment Year.

  3. The refund status displays instantly.

Understanding the Status Messages

What the portal shows tells you what to do next:

  • Submitted and pending for e-verification: You filed it. You still need to verify it.

  • Successfully e-verified: Verified. Now the Department must process it.

  • Processed: The return completed successfully. Your refund is on the way.

  • Defective: Errors were found. You will get a notice (under Section 139(9)) asking you to fix them. Respond fast, or nothing happens.

  • Case transferred to Assessing Officer: The tax system flagged your case. Your local AO is doing a further check. This will take longer.
