Soon, passengers will be able to change their train travel dates without any cancellation charges. Under this new initiative, passengers will be able to change the travel dates on their confirmed tickets through the IRCTC website or app and pay only the fare difference (if applicable).
What are the rules now?
Currently, if a passenger misses their train, they receive no refund. Whether the delay is due to a train delay, bad weather, or an emergency, the entire fare is forfeited.
Furthermore, if a ticket is cancelled before the journey begins, a fee is deducted depending on the class of travel and the time of cancellation. This fee typically ranges from 25% to 50% of the ticket price, and sometimes results in the passenger forfeiting their entire fare.
How will the new system work?
According to a Times of India report, under this new facility, instead of canceling tickets and paying a penalty, passengers will have the option to change their travel dates. Passengers will be able to log in to the IRCTC website or app, select their booked ticket, and choose a different date of travel or a different train, provided seats are available. They will only have to pay the fare difference.
