Its route will be between Jind and Panipat, which will cover a distance of 90 km and reach the destination. 360 kg of hydrogen will be filled in the engine for one round. The work of construction of hydrogen plant is also going on at a fast pace and the train has also been trialed. He said that Indian Railways is working towards zero carbon by 2030. Keeping this in mind, hydrogen will be used as fuel in trains.

Hydrogen trains are running in these countries

Currently hydrogen trains are running in Germany, China, Japan, France, Sweden and USA, but the German trains have the most advanced technology. Hydrogen trains are environment friendly and have zero emissions. That is why these trains are being preferred.

Fares for trains running abroad

The average fare of a hydrogen train in Germany is around Rs 7-10 per kilometer. However, this fare depends on the route, time and class. The world’s first hydrogen tram started in 2019 in Foshan city in China, but it was closed in 2024 due to cost and low passengers. The fare there was around Rs 25-35 per journey. It was Rs 5-7 per kilometer depending on the distance. In Japan, hydrogen trains are running on a trial basis on the Yokohama-Kawasaki route since 2022, where the fare is around Rs 10-15 per kilometer. In the USA, a hydrogen train is going to start between Redlands-San Bernardino in California, whose fare can be estimated to be Rs 12-15 per kilometer.

Hydrogen Train Fare in India

According to an estimate, the fare in India will not be kept high so that common passengers can travel by it. According to experts, the fare may be higher than sleeper. However, since it is still in trial, it will be a bit difficult to make a clear estimate regarding the fare.

Trial successful

According to the Railway Ministry, the work of hydrogen fuel cell and infrastructure is being done as a pilot project. Its trial has been successful. The design of the cell and the hydrogen plant have been approved. Global agencies have given approval regarding hydrogen safety. Indian Railways has awarded the work of retro fitment of existing Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) for hydrogen fuel. Preparations are on to make the prototype train at ICF Chennai.

Plan to run 35 trains

Railways has planned 35 hydrogen trains under Hydrogen Heritage, with the estimated cost of per train being Rs 80 crore and land infrastructure costing Rs 70 crore for heritage and hill routes.
