IMD Weather News: The Meteorological Department has predicted renewed activity in the Bay of Bengal. Meanwhile, moderate to heavy rainfall is forecast for several states in South India over the next four to five days.
IMD Weather News: The first week of October brought rain to many parts of the country. Due to the prevailing conditions from the Bay of Bengal to the Arabian Sea, heavy rainfall occurred in states ranging from the Northeast to Kolkata, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi-NCR, Punjab, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. The national capital also received heavy rainfall over the past 7-8 days.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a change in the weather in North India, while several states in South India may experience moderate to heavy rainfall over the next 4-5 days. Meanwhile, favorable conditions exist for the return of the southwest monsoon to Mumbai, the country’s financial capital. According to weather experts, a cyclonic circulation persists in the Bay of Bengal, but it is unlikely to become effective and bring rain.
Let’s first talk about Delhi. The first week of October saw record-breaking rainfall in Delhi. The base station, Safdarjung, recorded a total of 90 mm of rainfall between October 1 and October 8, nearly six times the monthly normal average of 14.1 mm. Meanwhile, the Airport Observatory, Palam, has recorded 100 mm of rainfall so far, 53 mm of which occurred in the last 24 hours alone. All observatories in Delhi and the NCR have recorded moderate to heavy rainfall over the past two days.
Weather experts predict no further rainfall this week. This dry spell will continue into next week. The current rainfall in Delhi was due to the combined effects of a Western Disturbance and a cyclonic system formed in the plains of northern India. The Western Disturbance is still active in the mountainous regions and may bring sporadic rainfall for the next three days, although its impact will gradually subside. Meanwhile, the cyclonic system over Haryana and Rajasthan (which was previously passing through the Delhi region) has now moved into the foothills of Uttarakhand and western Uttar Pradesh. In the coming days, this system will extend into the foothills of Uttar Pradesh bordering Nepal.
Heavy Rains Expected in South India
The withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from the central and eastern parts of the country is now progressing rapidly. Meanwhile, the northeast monsoon is preparing to make its presence felt in South India. In fact, the departure of the southwest monsoon signals the onset of the northeast monsoon. Moderate to light rain is expected in Tamil Nadu, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, South Interior Karnataka, coastal Karnataka, and Kerala between October 8 and 12.
There may be a brief pause in the intensity of rainfall for a few days, but rainfall may pick up again in the third week of October. Meanwhile, winds in the Bay of Bengal are shifting, with easterlies replacing westerlies, a key indicator of the onset of the northeast monsoon. According to Skymet Weather, rainfall will increase in the interior of South India in the coming days, and heavy rains cannot be ruled out in some areas. Major cities likely to be affected by the rains include Chennai, Villupuram, Tiruvannamalai, Vellore, Trichy, Madurai, Tirupati, Anantapur, Kurnool, Ongole, Bengaluru, Mysore, Mangaluru, Kochi, Kollam, Kottayam, and Thrissur.
