2000 Rupee Note: The Reserve Bank of India has already withdrawn 2,000 rupee notes from circulation, but notes worth ₹5,884 crore have still not been returned to banks. The Reserve Bank of India announced the withdrawal of 2,000 rupee banknotes from circulation on May 19, 2023.
2000 Rupee Note: 2000 rupee notes were issued by the Reserve Bank of India during demonetization. These pink notes quickly made headlines. At that time, 500 and 1000 rupee notes were discontinued. A new 500 rupee note was issued in their place. Following this, speculation began that 2000 rupee notes might not be seen for long. This is exactly what happened: the RBI announced the withdrawal of 2000 rupee notes on May 19, 2023. The Reserve Bank of India has released new data on how many 2000 rupee notes the RBI has received so far.
According to the Reserve Bank of India ( RBI ), the total value of ₹2,000 notes has declined to just ₹5,884 crore as of September 30, 2025. This means that this is the amount still in circulation across the country. When the withdrawal was announced in May 2023, their value was ₹3.56 lakh crore. This indicates a decline in the number of ₹2,000 notes in circulation. Of the total ₹2,000 banknotes, 98.35% have now been withdrawn.
2000 rupee note is legal tender

This means that it cannot be used in everyday life. However, it can still be used to pay off debts and for financial purposes.

Know why Rs 2000 notes were discontinued
The 2000 rupee note was first issued after demonetization in November 2016. At that time, the government introduced a new 2000 rupee note to address cash shortages by demonetizing old 500 and 1000 rupee notes. However, in recent years, the RBI clarified that the need for this note had disappeared, as smaller denomination notes were in sufficient supply. Additionally, there were concerns about black money and counterfeit currency due to the larger denomination notes. Consequently, the RBI announced the withdrawal of the 2000 rupee note.
