Agniveer Recruitment: The Agnipath scheme is being reconsidered in the armed forces. Under this scheme, soldiers, airmen and sailors are recruited for a period of four years.
It is now being reviewed so that the need for technically skilled and trained people can be met, as well as the average age of soldiers can be kept low.
Agniveer Recruitment 2025: Discussion on extending the time after Operation Sindoor…
After the stellar performance of the Agniveers in Operation Sindoor in May, there is talk of extending their retention period. The news published in the Indian Express quoted sources as saying that this step could be taken in view of the training, experience and expertise gained by the Agniveers over the past four years.
Agniveer bharti: Retention can increase up to 80%…
The Agniveer scheme was launched in 2022. Its first batch will complete its four-year term by the end of 2026. As per the current rules, only 25% of Agniveers can be retained in the services after four years based on their merit and the needs of the organization, but now there is talk of increasing this percentage in the army. It is being told that 70-75% retention can be given in infantry and combat units. Along with this, specially trained personnel (air defense, signals, engineers) can get 80% retention.
Special forces can get 100% retention. Let us tell you that the selection of special forces is done during the initial training itself, however it will be ensured that increasing the retention does not increase the average age of Agniveers. These figures are currently under consideration within the army and it will be further considered in the next army commanders’ meeting. After this, the final proposal will be sent to the government for approval.
After Operation Sindoor, efforts to induct new weapons, equipment and modern technology in the army have intensified, but there is a need for trained people to use them. In the army, Agniveers first undergo basic training for six months at regimental centres and then undergo specialized training in their units. An official said that if trainees are selected in the first six months and then undergo specialized training for three to six months, then under the current plan, Agniveers will be available for only two to two and a half years. This increases the cost of training a lot. If trained people go out every four years, new people will have to be trained repeatedly. This will increase the burden on the organisation and there will also be a shortage of limited trainers.
What will happen in the Navy and the Air Force?
Increasing retention can also be considered in the Navy and the Air Force. Last year, Air Chief Marshal AP Singh, the chief of the Air Force, had said that the performance of the Agniveers has been very good and they are ready to retain more than 25% of the Agniveers. The Navy is also ready to increase the retention of sailors after the completion of four years of the first batch.
Consideration to increase the maximum age from 21 years…
Earlier this year, Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi had said that work is underway to make the leave of Agniveers like that of regular soldiers and provide similar facilities in case of martyrdom. He also said that there is a need for technically skilled people and consideration is being given to increasing the maximum age of recruitment from 21 to 23 years. Technically complex services require more experienced and skilled people. The Agnipath scheme is not able to fully meet this need, hence the need for changes in it is being felt.
