The days of queuing up at an Aadhaar enrolment centre just to change your mobile number are nearly over. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has announced that it will soon introduce a feature allowing users to update their Aadhaar-linked mobile number directly from home using the official Aadhaar App.

This is a massive convenience upgrade, particularly for the elderly, rural residents, and busy professionals who rely on their linked mobile number for critical services like UPI, banking, and government OTPs.

The Two-Step Security Check

To ensure the process remains secure despite being remote, UIDAI is employing a two-step digital verification method:

  1. OTP Verification: This is the first layer. You will receive a One-Time Password (OTP) on either your existing or the new mobile number you are registering. Entering this correctly confirms ownership of the number.

  2. Face Authentication (The Kicker): This is the game-changer. After the OTP is confirmed, the Aadhaar App will ask you to scan your face using the phone’s front camera. The application will then perform a live match against the photograph stored in the Aadhaar database.

If the face authentication is successful, the mobile number update is completed without any need for physical documents or a trip to an enrolment centre.

Why This Change Matters

The mobile number linked to Aadhaar is the most crucial piece of data for digital life in India. If it becomes inactive, access to everything from your bank account to your PAN linking is effectively locked.

The new home-based update process ensures:

  • Accessibility: Millions of users in remote areas or senior citizens with mobility issues gain the ability to manage their essential ID with ease.

  • Convenience: Busy working professionals can update their data in minutes from the comfort of their home.

  • Security: The dual check (OTP + Biometric Face Scan) maintains a high level of security despite the remote access.

The feature is currently “coming soon” but represents Aadhaar becoming exponentially more user-friendly and convenient.
