Income Tax UPI Payment: Earlier, the thought of filing income tax would often bring to mind banks, net banking, and the numerous hassles involved. But now, the picture has completely changed. The Income Tax Department has simplified the payment process so much that you can pay your tax in minutes using your own mobile phone, using your own UPI app, without visiting a bank or going through any lengthy procedures.
Why has paying taxes through UPI become easier?
Now, the Income Tax e-filing portal offers the option to make UPI payments directly from apps like Paytm, PhonePe, and Google Pay. The money is deducted directly from your bank account, and the challan is generated within seconds. This eliminates the need for long waits and extra setup.

- Go to incometax.gov.in and log in with your PAN and password.
- Select the ‘e-Pay Tax’ option on the dashboard (you can do it without logging in, but logging in is preferable).
- Click on ‘New Payment’ and select the tax type (Advance/Self-Assessment, etc.).
- Select the correct Assessment Year and enter the amount you need to pay.
- Check and confirm the name and PAN.
- The portal will generate the invoice and display the available payment modes, from which select UPI mode.
- Note down or keep the QR code or the provided UPI ID on the screen.
- Open Paytm/PhonePe/Google Pay on your mobile and select ‘Scan & Pay’.
- Scan the QR code, verify the amount, and confirm the payment by entering the UPI PIN.
- Keep your phone open until the app displays ‘Payment successful.’ Go to the e-filing portal and check the ‘Payment history’ status; it usually changes to ‘Paid’ within 1–2 minutes.
- Then download your receipt/challan from ‘Payment history’ and save the CIN/UTR number (required for legal proof).
- If the portal shows ‘Pending’ after payment, wait 30–60 minutes and then refresh and check.
- If the money has been deducted from the bank statement but the challan has not been generated, raise a ticket or contact the bank/UPI support with the UTR.
- Failed UPI payments are usually reversed within some time; make the payment again only when the status is clear.
