Mumbai Rains: The continuous torrential rain in Mumbai and its surrounding areas has disrupted life. Under this, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert. There is heavy waterlogging on the roads, which is hindering traffic.
Traffic has come to a complete halt due to waterlogging in many parts of the city including Andheri subway. Andheri subway had to be closed for more than 6 hours, due to which people had to use other routes. Rain has also affected flights. Indigo Airlines issued an advisory for passengers and said that flights are running late due to waterlogging and traffic jams on the roads leading to the airport. To avoid any trouble, officials have urged people to stay at home.
In view of the bad weather, the Maharashtra government has declared a holiday for all schools and colleges in Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg. This decision has been taken to ensure the safety of students and staff.
High tide hazard
On Monday, Mumbai recorded 177 mm of rain in 6-8 hours. Vikhroli received 139.5 mm, Santacruz 129.1 mm, and Juhu 128.5 mm. The city is expected to witness a high tide of 3.74 metres at 9:17 am today. This high-tide and continuous rain can worsen the situation as the sea level rises during this time and water drainage becomes difficult.
Indigo issued advisory
Heavy rains have also affected flights. Indigo Airlines has issued a travel advisory for passengers. It states that due to heavy rains in Mumbai, many roads leading to the airport have been waterlogged and traffic has slowed down, causing delays in both departure and arrival of flights. The airline has advised passengers that if they have a flight, they should leave a little earlier and keep checking the flight status on the app or website. The airline has also apologized for the inconvenience.
The government and administration are ready
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis held a review meeting and directed officials to remain on high alert. He has also appealed to people not to step out of their homes without any reason. BMC has advised citizens to use helpline number 1916 for any emergency.
