Silver Jewelry Hallmarking : The government is soon going to take a big step regarding the purity of silver jewelry. The new rule of hallmarking on silver jewelry can be implemented from September 1, 2025.
This rule will be voluntary for now. That is, customers will have the option to buy hallmarked jewelry or jewelry without hallmark. This will not be mandatory. This process will be exactly like the one started earlier for gold jewelry.
What is the new change?
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has set 6 purity levels for silver. These are 900, 800, 835, 925, 970 and 990. Now every silver jewellery will be given a 6-digit hallmark unique ID (HUID). This ID will easily tell how pure the jewellery is. Whether the silver jewellery is real or not. This method will replace the old hallmarking system.
What is hallmarking?
Hallmarking means guaranteeing the purity of the metal. This is a government process in which precious metals like gold or silver are tested and certified. The hallmarking scheme of BIS ensures that the customer gets the same quality for which he is paying.
What will be the benefit to the customers?
With this new rule, customers will be able to avoid fraud. Often there is a possibility of adulteration in jewellery without hallmark. But now such risk will be less in hallmarked silver. The most important thing is that customers can go to the BIS Care App and check immediately with the Verify HUID feature whether the hallmark written on the jewellery is real or fake.
Earlier the rule was applicable on gold
The government had made hallmarking mandatory on gold jewellery in the year 2021. On the same lines, this rule is now being brought on silver jewellery as well. This will make the jewellery market more transparent and will also increase the confidence of customers.
What will change after September 1?
From September 1, customers will have the option to buy hallmarked or non-hallmarked silver. But it is expected that people will now trust hallmarked jewellery more. This will not only benefit customers, but will also increase trust in the jewellery industry.
