Indian Railways: Indian Railways is going to upgrade its Passenger Reservation System (PRS) with modern technology. This will increase the ticket booking capacity of the railways four times.
After the upgrade, this system will be able to book one lakh tickets per minute. Currently, this capacity is 25,000 tickets per minute. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav told Parliament that the Railways is completely restructuring the PRS through the Central for Railway Information System (CRIS). In this, hardware, software, network equipment and security infrastructure will be replaced and upgraded. The new system will be based on the latest cloud technology, which will provide better and faster services to the passengers.
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said in Parliament that the current PRS system was implemented in 2010 and runs on Itanium servers and OpenVMS (Virtual memory system). Due to this, there is a need to upgrade the current PRS system from the traditional technology system to the latest cloud technology system.
Passengers will benefit from Railvan app
The Railway Minister said that the Railways has also recently launched the ‘Railvan’ app, through which passengers can book both reserved and unreserved tickets from their mobile. Keeping in mind the convenience of passengers, the Railways has reduced the Advance Reservation Period (ARP) of reserved tickets to 60 days from November 1, 2024, which was earlier 120 days. According to the Minister, this change has been made to improve the booking trend and reduce the incidents of cancellation.
Railways is increasing Non-AC coaches
The Railway Minister said that the Railways has taken major steps to facilitate general class passengers. The percentage of non-AC coaches has now reached about 70% and a special programme has been launched to build 17,000 new non-AC general and sleeper coaches in the next five years. In the financial year 2024-25 itself, 1,250 general coaches have been added to long distance trains.
This upgrade will not only increase booking capacity but also make the passenger experience modern and streamlined. The railways claims that this change is being made keeping in mind the future requirements.
