Under this decision of the government, the number of foreign students will be 9 percent higher than the limit set in 2025. So far, the limit has been set at only 2.70 lakh students, which will be increased to 2.95 lakh in 2026. However, due to several other immigration policies that prevent or keep foreign students from enrolling, the actual number of new foreign students in 2026 may still be less than the figure of 2.95 lakh.
At present, the target is to admit 2.70 lakh students, out of which 176,000 foreign students have been allocated for higher education and 94 thousand students for vocational education. The educational institutions will get the seats allotted for at least 2025 in the next year 2026.
