Mussoorie: If you are planning to visit the Queen of Hills i.e. Mussoorie in the pleasant rainy season, then this news is for you. A new rule has been implemented for the tourists coming to Mussoorie.

The state tourism department has made registration of the increasing crowd and traffic in Mussoorie mandatory. This new rule has come into effect from Friday i.e. 1 August. It will be mandatory for tourists to register on this portal before coming to Mussoorie. This will provide real time information about the crowd and traffic in Mussoorie, which will help the police and administration to control the traffic. Automatic number plate recognition cameras will also be installed at the entry gates of Mussoorie.

‘Carrying capacity’ means – only as many people should stay in an area as that area can bear without harming the environment. This direction has been given on the basis of the report of a committee formed by the National Green Tribunal (NGT). The committee had given 19 suggestions to save the ecology of Mussoorie in 2023, which also includes this registration system. On May 8, the NGT reviewed the action taken by the state government on the report and clearly said that the pace of implementation of these suggestions should be accelerated.

New system for registration

In the report submitted to the NGT in 2023, it was suggested that the registration of tourists coming to Mussoorie should be done according to the carrying capacity there. It was said to keep in mind the facilities like parking, available guest rooms. Also, it was suggested that a small fee should be charged from the tourists, which can be used for waste management and cleaning. After a little delay, now the Uttarakhand Tourism Department has started the system of registration of tourists from Friday i.e. August 1. This step is one of the 19 recommendations given by the NGT.

According to the tourism department, a meeting was held to inform hotel and homestay owners about this new system. He said, “We have explained the process of registration and filling the tourist data on the portal to the hotel owners and managers through a live demo. Now this registration system will be done in real time, that is, as soon as a tourist checks in, his data will be entered on the portal at the same time.”

Increasing tourism pressure

According to the Indian Express report, Mussoorie and Dehradun are well connected by road and rail and the number of tourists is increasing every year. In 1958, around 1.5 lakh tourists came here, which increased to 3 lakh in 1966 and 8.5 lakh by 2000. In the last year before the pandemic i.e. in 2019 , the number of tourists visiting Mussoorie had exceeded 30 lakh. The effect of this increasing pressure can be clearly seen on the infrastructure of Mussoorie. By 2023, 303 hotels, 201 homestays and 6 dharamshalas were registered in Mussoorie. But talking about parking, there is parking facility for only 1,240 vehicles in the entire city, including public and private places. The committee formed in 2023 had suggested that the number of tourist vehicles should be limited to this limit, so that there is no more pressure on the city and environmental balance is maintained.
